By February of 1989, basketball had run out of ordinary language for what Dominique Wilkins did above the rim and settled instead on calling him a film. The Human Highlight Film had already taken a scoring title at 30.3 points per game in 1986 and would close this season seventh in the league at 26.2, and Miami got the full reel on February 19, 1989. Wilkins gathered on the move, drove into the belly of the lane and elevated into a wall of three Heat defenders who arrived together, then hammered the ball down over every one of them without breaking stride. He closed with 25 points on 9-of-22 shooting, a flawless 7-of-7 from the line, six rebounds, one assist and one block. The nine-time All-Star and two-time Slam Dunk champion remains the Hawks' all-time leader in both games played (882) and points scored (23,292), reached the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2006 and was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. His number 21 will never be worn in Atlanta again.
