For a season headlined by a potential All-Rookie First Team nod, a playoff appearance, and a distinction as one of just five first-year players to finish among the top 10 in points, rebounds, and assists, Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s rookie campaign — even from the beginning — could always be described through one teammate-inspired four-word phrase: “not your average rookie.” Matching the poise and assuredness of a four-year collegiate star with the footwork, IQ, and confidence of a seasoned pro, Jaquez’s adjustment to the NBA appeared seamless against the Detroit Pistons. Overwhelming the Pistons’ defense with veteran-savvy pump fakes and scores from the mid-post, unselfish passes to open teammates, and competitiveness on the defensive end, the 2023 No. 18 pick provided a much-needed calm during the Miami Heat’s thrilling, one-point win on October 25, 2023. The latest exhibit in Miami’s longstanding tradition of unearthing gems outside of the lottery, Jaquez opened with a perfectly-efficient six points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in just 13 minutes, riding that momentum to an Eastern Conference Rookie the Month honor just weeks later.
