Charlotte had spent three seasons waiting for someone to build around, and the first pick of the 1991 draft answered on February 19, 1992. Larry Johnson went at the rim twice against Denver with the kind of force that made a 6-foot-6 power forward one of the most talked-about rookies in the league, throwing down a pair of dunks that had the Coliseum on its feet. He shot his way to 34 points, a career high at the time, in a 106-104 Hornets win. Three months later Johnson was Rookie of the Year at 19.2 points and 11.0 rebounds a night, and within a year he was an All-Star and an All-NBA pick whose Grandmama character made him one of the sport's biggest personalities. Johnson finished with 34 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals.
