By April of 1982, New Jersey had improved by 20 games and reached the postseason, and the third overall pick of the previous summer was the engine behind it. Buck Williams brought his Rookie of the Year season to Brendan Byrne Arena on April 20, 1982, bullying his way into the paint in the fourth quarter for a slam and drawing the foul on the way up. He shot 9-of-15 from the floor and ripped nine of his 13 rebounds off the offensive glass. An All-Star at 22, Williams would grab at least 12 boards a night across his New Jersey years and retire as the franchise's all-time leading rebounder, his number 52 raised to the rafters. He posted 23 points, 13 rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block.
