Joe Dumars built his reputation on the defensive end, which tends to bury the fact that Detroit's quiet guard could also make the ball disappear. Opening the 1989 playoffs against Boston on April 28, Dumars slid into the lane, hung, and flipped a no-look scoop off the glass without ever turning his head toward the rim. He finished the 101-91 Game 1 win with 25 points on 11-of-23 shooting, one rebound, nine assists and one steal, the opening step of a run that ended with a sweep of the Lakers and Finals MVP honors. Dumars spent all 14 of his seasons in Detroit, made five All-Defensive teams, won a second title in 1990, and has his number 4 in the rafters. The NBA's Sportsmanship Award carries his name.
