Freshman Gems

Given the compliments Pelle Larsson received after his NBA career’s most productive game to date, it’s reasonable to wonder how difficult it was for the Miami Heat’s No. 44 selection to remain grounded. If November 24, 2024’s breakout affirmed one thing, though, it’s that the opponents standing in his path certainly had problems keeping themselves floored. Ensured already of a memorable box score tally by the fourth quarter’s arrival, the Sweden-born swingman positions himself for another eye-opener, leaving Hall of Fame-bound shooter Klay Thompson bamboozled and airbourne after a pump fake. With one confused Dallas Mavericks defender in the dust, Larsson smoothly transitions to another, feigning his rim attack deceptively enough to punish Daniel Gafford’s undisciplined jump before quickly shoveling a pass to set up a teammate’s highlight flush. The rookie’s performance — ultimately prompting Miami’s All-Star forward to draw comparisons to his younger self — was undoubtedly one of veteran-like poise, as Larsson helped key an overtime win through 14 points (on six-of-eight shooting), five rebounds, one steal, and a 3-pointer.
