It was too early for the NBA’s history books to gauge what Sam Cassell’s career would eventually entail, from the calm-and-collected approach in late-game situations, efficient three-level scoring, and the pair of well-earned championships to begin his career. Though, in closing the book on the New York Knicks’ spirited comeback bid at Madison Square Garden in Game Three, the gifted floor general’s prelude couldn’t have come on a grander occasion. Easily overlooked on a stage of Hall of Fame centers playing one another to a relative standstill, Cassell presents himself as the game’s ultimate X-factor, lifting towards the 3-point arc to provide his Most Valuable Player-winning teammate with an outlet. Showing not even an ounce of fear as a rookie on the league’s loftiest stage, Cassell connects on a crowd-muting triple, supplying a lead in the final half-minute. Nearly ruled out after having the wind knocked out of him, Cassell responded by taking the air out of New York’s crowd by following his herculean shot with four free throws thereafter. Guiding the Houston Rockets’ 2-1 series edge with veteran-like poise, Cassell recorded 15 points (on four-of-six shooting), alongside five rebounds, one assist, and three 3-pointers on June 12, 1994.
